Embracing the Uncertainty: Starting a Design Business

Halfway through my journey of starting a design business, I wrote this reflection with the hope that a year later, I’d look back and say, “Wow, I made it.” However, after that first year, I decided not to continue. Now, I'm taking the time to reflect on the lessons I’ve learned and what I could have done differently. This period of introspection is invaluable as I pivot, explore new passions, and plan the next chapter of my creative journey.

Embarking on the journey of starting your own design business can feel like stepping into a vast ocean of uncertainty. The thrill of creativity and independence is often overshadowed by the waves of self-doubt, fear of rejection, and the daunting task of figuring out how to earn a living doing what you love. If you find yourself feeling lost in this whirlwind, you're not alone.

The Rollercoaster of Confidence

When you begin to charge clients for your work, the initial excitement can quickly be replaced by a paralyzing fear of not being “good enough.” Imposter syndrome whispers doubts in your ear: “What if they don’t like my design? What if I can’t deliver what they expect?” It’s common to feel overwhelmed by the responsibility that comes with each project, particularly when it involves stepping out of your comfort zone.

Setting Your Rates: The Internal Battle

Determining your pricing can be one of the most challenging aspects of running a design business. You know your skills have value, but when it comes time to communicate that value to clients, hesitation creeps in. It’s easy to undervalue your work, especially if you’re just starting. You might find yourself undercharging to avoid rejection, but this can lead to burnout and resentment. Start by assessing your skills and the market. Research what others in your field are charging, and don’t shy away from positioning yourself where you want to be. Remember, it’s okay to feel uncomfortable when raising your rates; discomfort often signifies growth.

Navigating Client Relationships

The fear of rejection is a significant hurdle for many designers. You put your heart and soul into your work, so when a client says “no,” it can feel personal. But remember, rejection doesn’t reflect your worth as a designer. Often, it’s about fit or timing, not a judgment on your talent. Building strong client relationships starts with clear communication and setting expectations from the get-go. Be transparent about your process, timelines, and limitations. When clients feel understood and respected, they are more likely to trust your expertise—even if your design isn’t what they envisioned at first.

Redefining Success

In the early stages, it’s vital to redefine what success looks like for you. It’s not always about landing big clients or earning a hefty paycheck. Celebrate small victories: landing a project, receiving positive feedback, or even simply showing up and doing the work. Each step forward is a testament to your resilience and passion.

Finding Your Community

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Connect with fellow designers, either online or in your local area. Sharing experiences and advice can offer valuable insights and remind you that everyone struggles at times. Online platforms like design forums or social media groups can provide support, encouragement, and inspiration.

Embracing the Journey

Ultimately, starting a design business is not just about the destination but about embracing the journey. The fear and uncertainty you feel now will shape you into a more confident and capable designer. Every project is a lesson, and every setback is an opportunity for growth. So take a deep breath, remind yourself of your passion, and keep pushing forward. The world needs your creativity, and with each step, you’re closer to finding your footing in this beautiful, chaotic landscape of design. Trust the process, and believe in yourself—you’re more capable than you know.
